Tips for picking a great destination for your next event

From financial incentives to on-the-ground support, here’s what event planners should look out for – and how Macao ticks the boxes.

With government backing, global networks and strong connectivity, Macao is becoming a planner-friendly destination.

You’ve locked in your agenda and fine-tuned the budget for your next MICE event. Now comes the next major decision: where to bring it all to life.

The right destination can make or break a corporate gathering, shaping everything from attendance numbers to the overall attendee experience. Increasingly, that decision comes down to more than venues and hotel rooms. Government backing, partner networks and smart support infrastructure are becoming the real differentiators – and few destinations have moved as decisively on this front as Macao.

Here's what to look for when evaluating your next host city – and how Macao measures up.

1. Look out for government backing with accessible financial support

Around the world, the most competitive MICE destinations don’t just welcome events; they invest in them. Macao is one standout example, providing direct financial support for events held in Macao and the neighbouring city Hengqin through Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute’s (IPIM) Convention and Exhibition Stimulation Programme.

Organisers can easily estimate potential funding in advance, removing one of the more frustrating uncertainties in the early stages of destination selection.

2. Tap into a global network built for planners

Financial support is only part of the picture. IPIM’s recently launched Global MICE Partners Alliance Programme addresses the equally important question of who planners can collaborate with on the ground.

Designed specifically for PCOs, event organisers, planning agencies, DMCs and suppliers, the programme gives members access to a suite of practical benefits such as intelligence sharing, brand marketing support and bidding assistance. Members can also benefit from “Macao MICE Plus” privilege packages spanning air travel, hotels, dining, attractions, retail and MICE services.

This ensures a more streamlined planning process for planners, with built-in commercial benefits that can help offset costs while strengthening programme delivery.

3. Choose a hub with connectivity built for international delegates

Through incentives and open-door policies, IPIM is building a support system that makes Macao an easy city for MICE planners to say yes to.

Accessibility, particularly for international delegates, remains a cornerstone of any successful MICE destination. Macao's position within China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) is a significant logistical asset – GBA airports collectively connect to more than 200 cities worldwide and handled over 230 million passengers in 2025.

Within the region, movement is straightforward. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge links three major hubs, offering delegates flexibility in how they enter the area – particularly valuable for large groups arriving from multiple origins. For planners, this connectivity also opens up creative programming possibilities: pre- or post-event itineraries across the GBA or multi-city formats that use Hengqin and Macao in combination.

4. Prioritise destinations with welcoming visa access

Visa requirements continue to be a key consideration in destination selection. Like many destinations across Asia, Macao embraces a welcoming approach to international delegates and events.

Macao’s rich cultural heritage is complemented by world-class infrastructure and government-backed funding, making it increasingly attractive to MICE planners.

On the Henley Openness Index, an annual ranking that measures how many nationalities a country or territory allow visa-free entry to, Macao ranks sixth, placing it among the most accessible destinations for international delegates. Travellers from more than 80 countries and cities can enter Macao without having to obtain a visa.

For planners, fewer visa hurdles mean fewer last-minute cancellations, simpler pre-event communications and a stronger case to make when pitching the destination to senior stakeholders who need to approve travel.

5. Select versatile and state-of-the-art spaces

Macao is home to a wide range of hotels and integrated resorts that combine accommodation, F&B, entertainment and meeting spaces in one location.

The best cities for MICE lead with world-class infrastructure that cater to delegate convenience and their digital requirements. Macao’s expansive, flexible venues, including the Galaxy International Convention Center and integrated resorts such as MGM Cotai, Wynn Palace, The Venetian Macao, Studio City Macau and Grand Lisboa Palace Resort combine accommodation, F&B, entertainment and meeting spaces within the same footprint. This allows attendees to move seamlessly between plenary sessions and exhibition spaces, eliminating the need for planners to book multiple locations.

Taken together, these factors make a compelling case. For those ready to take the next step, IPIM serves as a key partner in turning event ideas into reality in Macao. Find out more at mice.gov.mo.
